Essendon Fields has a long history of hosting aviation activities. In 1919, the Aero Club set up on the farmland known as St Johns. In 1923, the airfield became Essendon Aerodrome, a hub for Australia’s growing civil aviation industry. During WWII, it also served as a Defence base. In the 1950s, Essendon Airport became Melbourne’s international airport until 1970 when international flights were transferred to Tullamarine Airport. Domestic flights followed the next year.
