Essendon Fields has a long history of hosting aviation activities. In 1919, the Aero Club set up on the farmland known as St Johns. In the 1950s, Essendon Airport became Melbourne’s international airport until 1970 when international flights were transferred to Tullamarine Airport. Domestic flights followed the next year.
